Agency Adoption
When a child is to be placed for adoption through a public or private agency, the birth parents have already relinquished custody of the child to the agency, voluntarily or involuntarily, and their parental rights have been terminated. A home study is required before the child is placed with the adoptive parents. The agency will place the child with the adoptive parents for a 6-month probationary period before relinquishing legal custody. Because the birth parents’ rights have already been terminated, the agency will be required to consent to this type of adoption. Prior to entry of the final adoption order, the child-placing agency will complete an investigation and file a report with the court.
